This summer I would have traveled along with three other Haverford students and professors to Guatemala to help the Grupo Apoyo Mutuo (GAM), a nonprofit organization, digitize their archive. All students are Digital Scholars Compañeros, who have been working with the GAM since the start of the school year. Aside from being DS Compañeros, all of the students traveling with me are also Chesicks.
Throughout the year, the DS Compañeros have been learning to understand what archival work means, what metadata is, and understanding the political and social climate in Guatemala. The readings that we have done have caused me to become interested in the relations of the Guatemalan government with the United States government.
While we will no longer be traveling, the goal is to continue digitization at Haverford while the scanning is done on site in Guatemala. Originally we all had projects trying to connect the work that we would be doing in the archive to our own academic interests. I still hope to connect the digitization work I will be doing in Guatemala to the United States politics in Guatemala itself and in other countries, specifically the Middle East.
