Building relationships and deeply getting to know people is central to my belief system and how I work. It has helped me navigate all of my research thus far, as well as my work in public benefits.
In the last three years, I have found that the social world is so intricate given our ties to the digital world. In my graduate work, I looked into how social media impacts us all on an emotional level. I considered how it works to censor us while promoting freedom. Additionally, I looked into the impact censorship has on our historical knowledge as I believe it is important to look into how memory and heritage exist both as a political tool and an individual process.
My digital scholarship work so far, has been very collaborative. The most important part for me about the aspect of collaboration is the idea of ownership. No one should own someone else’s words and stories which is why I believe collaboration is the best path. Working on the historical archive held by the GAM (Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo) included digitizing documents from the archive to maintain the integrity of the archive. The majority of the digitization included transcribing the documents which had been scanned on-site in Guatemala. Working on transcriptions and data analysis of the archive, I was able to deep dive into the archive and do my own research.
